Description
The Stable Block at Soughton Hall is a large, square, two-storey structure built of brick with freestone dressings, topped with double-pitched hipped slate roofs. It features tall brick stacks that are arranged asymmetrically. Architectural details include banded angle pilasters, a stone plinth, and a deep moulded eaves cornice. The first-floor windows have shouldered architraves with keyblocks, while the tall ground-floor windows are framed with simplified Gibbs surrounds, keyblocks, and sill brackets. All windows contain later 2-light casements with small-pane glazing.
The north front is symmetrical with five bays, highlighted by an advanced central frontispiece that has a bold parapet and pedestals, possibly for ball-finials. A tall round-arched entrance, adorned with a decorated keyblock and hoodmould, leads to double panelled doors beneath a three-pane overlight. Above the entrance, there is a pair of oculi with moulded stone surrounds. A tall domed cupola with a weathervane and clock sits on the ridge above the entrance, flanked by pairs of windows on each storey.
The east side of the block has four windows, with details matching the front. The south elevation has three windows, but it has been partly remade without freestone surrounds. The central doorway features a stone surround with a round-arched head, keystone, and imposts, leading to late 20th-century part-glazed double doors. The small-pane windows here have flat-arched gauged brick heads with keystones. The lower storey windows appear to have been narrowed, and a fourth window on the far left of the upper storey has been blocked with brick. The west elevation also has four windows, similar to the east, but the first and third windows from the left have been converted into doorways in the late 20th century.
Inside, the building has been converted into a restaurant. It features an east-west cross wall with round-arched openings, and large cross and spine beams in the ground floor ceiling. Some of the original stall partitions have been preserved, showcasing arched top rails and posts with ball finials. The building is said to retain a good tie-beam roof.
