Description

The Coach-house Range at Soughton Hall is a two-storey, square block built in red brick with freestone dressings, including banded quoins. The east-facing front features three bays with a pediment, and behind the pediment is a complex hipped slate roof that was once topped with a glazed lantern for a pigeon loft. The façade includes three depressed carriage arches with rusticated jambs and keyblocks, which originally held double boarded doors. Above the keyblocks, there was a narrow beam that supported a now-removed canopy. The upper storey has three oculi set in plain stone surrounds, featuring quarry glazing. The centre of the pediment has a semi-circular blind opening and a heavily moulded cornice.

To the left, there is a 19th-century addition made of red brick under a hipped slate roof, which has a plain stone eaves cornice. This addition features a central shouldered stone doorcase with bolection moulding, containing a boarded door. Above this door is a window with a yellow brick round-arched head and radial glazing, along with a small oculus to the right on the first floor.

The parapets extend around the early Georgian block, which is accentuated by a heavily moulded string course. The north side has no openings, while the west side features a small two-light window under a segmental brick head on the upper storey to the left, along with a small brick gabled addition below. Brick stacks are located behind the parapets. The 19th-century block continues to the right and includes a lateral brick stack. The central doorway is blocked in brick, with a small opening to the top left, both having segmental brick heads. There are also small vents on this elevation. The south end of this block has a half-hipped roof and has undergone alterations, including a narrowed doorway offset to the left with a cambered brick head and boarded door, a butt joint from a former opening to the right, and the lintel of another opening far to the right. Three upper storey windows mirror those at the front, set under round-arched yellow brick heads with margin glazing.

Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection.
