Description
56 Glynne Way is an early 19th-century, two-storey row of cottages, referred to as "New Row" in an estate survey from 1844. The symmetrical facade is divided into three sections and constructed of brick, topped with a continuous shallow-pitched slate roof featuring dentilated eaves and a plain cornice band. Large rectangular chimneys are shared between two cottages. The six central cottages are designed as reflected units, with the central pair slightly projecting. Each of the three units has a full-height blind arch with a depressed head, within which are paired entrances on the ground floor, leading to each cottage. Above these entrances, on the first floor, is a centrally-placed dummy window. The two end cottages align with the flanking pairs, having their entrances facing the gable ends, and above each is a blind, recessed cross. Each cottage retains its original five-panelled door with a flat-arched lintel above. The ground floor features 24-pane fixed iron windows, while the first floor has 30-pane fixed iron windows, although six of these have been replaced, with No 50 having recent and inappropriate replacements. All windows have flat-arched lintels, plain projecting cills, and are recessed. Cottages Nos 46, 48, and 54 have external painted wooden shutters on the ground floor windows, which is an original feature.
The rear is constructed of rubble with brick dentilated eaves. There are early 20th-century rear extensions to each cottage, all except the end ones having shared roofs.
