Description
52 Glynne Way is an early 19th century two-storey row of cottages, referred to as "New Row" in an estate survey from 1844. The symmetrical facade is divided into three sections, constructed of brick and topped with a continuous shallow-pitched slate roof featuring dentilated eaves and a plain cornice band. Large rectangular chimneys are shared between pairs of cottages. The six central cottages are designed as reflected units, with the central pair slightly protruding. Each of the three units includes a full-height blind arch with a depressed head, within which there are paired entrances on the ground floor, serving each cottage. Above these entrances on the first floor is a centrally-placed dummy window. The two end cottages align with the flanking paired units, with their entrances facing the gable ends. Above each end cottage is a blind, recessed cross. Each cottage retains its original five-panelled door with a flat-arched lintel above. The ground floor features 24-pane fixed iron windows, while the first floor has 30-pane fixed iron windows, though six of these have been replaced, including those of No 50, which are considered recent and inappropriate. All windows have flat-arched lintels, plain projecting cills, and are recessed. Cottages Nos 46, 48, and 54 have external painted wooden shutters on the ground floor windows, which are an original feature.
The rear of the cottages is constructed of rubble and also features brick dentilated eaves. There are early 20th century rear extensions to each cottage, with all but the end ones sharing roofs.
