Description

The entrance to Hawarden Castle features early 19th-century tripartite gates, likely linked to the remodeling of the castle by Thomas Cundy in 1809-10. The central gateway is flanked by rusticated gate piers topped with moulded pediments. On either side, there are similar piers that provide pedestrian access, each with moulded caps and ball finials. Dwarf walls adjoin these piers, creating flanking arcs and featuring three additional piers on each side, made of rough dressed stone with plain, pyramidal capping. The entrance is further enhanced by decorative iron railings.
