Description
The gateway adjoining Hawarden New Castle to the east is designed in a castellated style and is attributed to the architect Buckler. It is depicted in a watercolour by him from 1819. This gateway is a simplified version of a similar gate located at the entrance to the park in the centre of the village. Constructed of uncoursed sandstone, it features a chamfered central archway topped with a crenellated parapet. The gateway is flanked by turrets that have blind arrow slits and crenellated battlements supported by simple corbels. Glynne heraldic shields are positioned on both faces of the entrance. The gateway includes 20th-century timber gates, and the adjoining walls extend to the east, merging with the service wing to the west.
