Description
The Gladstone Memorial Fountain is a three-sided stone structure designed in a municipal Renaissance style. It features a dedication plaque on the south face and relief portraits of William Ewart Gladstone and his wife, located in roundels on the west and east faces, respectively. Each face is adorned with swagged surrounds and topped with a classical flaming urn finial. The upper half of each face includes the inscription "Drink ye... the water... of life," positioned beneath arched cornices.
The base of the fountain has a moulded plinth with scrolled corners. At the north corner, there is a sculpted, armed putto sitting astride a dolphin, while the other corners feature griffins that bear the arms of the Glynnes and the Gladstones. The lower sections are decorated with acanthus motifs and central lozenges that contain lion's heads. Currently, the fountain is disused.
