Description
The Former Shambles is a pair of large, plain gate piers from the early 19th century, accompanied by single-storey lodges on either side. Constructed of sandstone, the eastern lodge features brick dentilated eaves at the rear.
In the third quarter of the 19th century, the street facades were refaced to create a series of arcaded units with Tudor arches, consisting of four units to the west and two to the east of the gate piers. These units were originally used as shambles, housing butchers' shops until the early 21st century. Cattle markets were held in the Inn courtyard during the late 19th century. The structure is made of red brick with yellow brick detailing, and it has a coped parapet with moulded brackets. The arches and reveals are chamfered, with plain abaci at the springing, and there are plain plinths and simple decorative brick banding on the arcade piers.
The two right-hand units to the west are open and have served as a bus shelter since 1953. Inside, there is a stone plaque set into the wall that commemorates the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and provides foundation details.
