Description
The Coach-house and Stables located to the northeast of Hartsheath is an L-shaped range of buildings, with the eastern section being a separate, later sawmill and cottage. The stables are split-level, featuring one and two storeys, constructed of stone with a moulded stone eaves cornice and hipped slate roofs. The front elevation to the east showcases central stone rubble stables, which are fronted by a nine-bay open Greek Doric colonnade made of massive stuccoed shafts with brown stone capital mouldings. The floor of the colonnade is made of pebble sets, and the rear wall is finished with coloured washed rubble.
Each end of the colonnade is flanked by a higher pavilion; the left pavilion contains the coach house, while the right pavilion houses loose boxes. These end pavilions are partly faced in dressed stone and feature hipped slate roofs, with two arched recesses in each front wall. Additionally, the south pavilion has two more arched recesses with doors and stone-blocked tympana in its return wall. The rear elevation to the west includes various windows, including several wooden barred openings on the upper floor. A stone bridge provides access to the upper floor entry at the southern end.
Attached to the yard elevation of the eastern range is a set of four pigsties. The stables include several later 19th-century loose boxes equipped with iron wall feeders. One stall features an early 19th-century wooden screen with three arches that define individual stalls, likely intended for hunters. Access to the heated accommodation on the upper floor is provided by a wooden staircase.
