Description
The Old Vaults Public House is a tall and elegant building dating from the 18th century, situated alongside a later, long range with a pitched roof extending to the rear. The building is constructed of red/brown brick with stone quoins and a stone-coped parapet, which returns approximately 2 metres on the sides, covered by slate roofs. The main facade is symmetrical and four storeys high, with a parapet. The ground floor is set back behind a colonnade of four stone Tuscan columns which support the upper levels. The columns have tall, square plinths, and the ground floor features a recent, small-paned bar entrance on the left. Above the colonnade are tall, square, 12-pane sash windows with segmental brick heads and projecting keystones, along with projecting stone sills. The windows have horns.
The left (east-facing) side of the building, overlooking the narrow Broomhill Lane, retains four original, unhorned 12-pane sashes on the first floor. There are two entrances to the ground floor, the left one within a section of whitened brick with a recently altered entrance and a modern panelled door. Modern casement windows are present on the second floor. Various sash windows, including one currently boarded, are found on the ground floor, particularly within the whitened brick section.
The interior of the building was not inspected during the survey.
