Description
This is a purpose-built bank constructed in a timber-framed neo-vernacular style, clearly inspired by an earlier building on the site. The building dates to the 18th century and comprises a main range to the right, a cross wing to the left, and an additional wing at the rear facing Clwyd Street. The structure is timber-framed and rests on a stone plinth, which forms a basement on the steeply sloping Clwyd Street elevation. A decorative band of timber framing incorporating pointed-ended quatrefoils appears above the plinth. The roof is slate-covered and features tall, star-shaped brick stacks at the left end and on the lower gable of the Clwyd Street elevation.
The main, square elevation has a two-window main range to the left. This section exhibits tall panelled framing with a bressumer (a projecting beam) between the floors, a mid-rail, and a passing brace to the first floor. An entrance is situated on the far right, marked by a Tudor-arched doorway and a part-glazed door. To the left of the doorway are paired, three-light mullioned and transomed windows with arched heads and sunk spandrels, featuring leaded glazing. Simpler, four-light mullioned windows are set beneath the eaves at first floor level.
The cross wing features close-studding in the lower storey and diagonal quadrant framing above a moulded bressumer. Decorative quatrefoils are set in lozenges to the jettied gable apex, which displays strongly projecting eaves details. A four-light mullioned and transomed window mirrors the design on the ground floor, while a four-light mullioned and transomed oriel window is positioned above, with a coved underside. The left return of the cross wing has similar framing. The south gable of the main range, visible above an adjoining building, is pebble-dashed and features moulded barge-boards and an apex finial.
The north front, facing Clwyd Street, slopes down sharply to the right, making the plinth a basement. The gable end of the main range is elaborately detailed, with a continuation of the quatrefoil band above the plinth, a five-light mullioned window with arched lights, a coved jetty to the first floor, and diagonal quadrant framing. Another quatrefoil band sits beneath the four-light mullioned window. Quadrant framing is visible in the gable apex. A doorway and two windows are located to the right within the plinth.
The rear wing has simpler close-studded framing with passing braces, plus a canted oriel mullioned and transomed window to the main storey. A four-light mullioned window is situated beneath the eaves. The basement level has a doorway with a single window to its left and a three-light mullioned window to its right. A half-hipped roof completes the lower gable, with a star-shaped stack. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
