Description
These buildings, which adjoin the north side of Gwerclas Hall, consist of four ranges arranged around a courtyard and are constructed of random stone with slate roofs.
The southern external facade of the south range acts as a screen wall, providing access from the entrance forecourt to the courtyard buildings. It connects to the northeast angle of the north wing of Gwerclas Hall and aligns with the southern gable end of the east range. The screen wall features a round-arched entrance framed by stone voussoirs. Above the arch are two blind windows with flat, gauged-brick heads, set beneath a triangular gable with a blind semi-oculus. The inner, north side of the screen wall’s archway is now filled with a boarded door and plain-glazed overlight, backed by brickwork. To the left, the north side of the north wing originally had a doorway that was replaced with a window in the 1950s, alongside a two-light window on the upper storey.
A two-storey, four-window service range adjoins the north wing at a right angle, forming the west side of the courtyard buildings. The external west elevation displays symmetrically arranged, two-light wooden cross-windows with quarry glazing, with a brick end stack on the left. The southern unit of this range is older, likely a remnant of the original 16th-century house. The north end was truncated in the mid to late 20th century, with a new end wall inserted. The east, internal side has a catslide lean-to, likely added in the 20th century; a boarded door with a small light sits to the left of the centre, and two-light wooden casement windows with plain glazing are arranged asymmetrically either side of the door, and further to the right. The upper storey features a three-light casement on the far left and right, and a two-light casement to the right of the door. Skylights are visible in the roof pitch.
The two-storey range to the east, formerly stables with a granary above, is four windows wide. The external, east side has 20th-century boarded doors on the left and to the left of the centre; 20th-century large-pane wooden windows sit on the right and to the right of the centre. The upper storey features four two-light wooden casements, all 20th-century replacements, except for the one on the far left, which is infilled with brickwork behind the wooden frame. The west side of the range, facing into the courtyard, includes a planked door to the centre of the upper storey, accessed by external stone steps; these steps are said to obscure an earlier window. Either side of the doorway, on the upper floor, are two-light, unglazed wooden windows with timber slats. The north end has been truncated, with a planked door to the upper storey within the gable end. The south gable end aligns with the southern facade and has a twelve-pane sash window on each floor.
The tall, single-storey north range has a wide opening in its west gable end. The south side, facing into the courtyard, features two tall openings with timber lintels and timber slats; the north wall has no openings.
The interior of the north range is two bays wide and open to the roof, revealing sawn tie-beam trusses. Evidence suggests it was once a dwelling or service unit, with traces of former window reveals and possible remains of a fireplace on the north wall.
