Description

The outbuildings, dating to the 18th and 20th centuries, are arranged around a courtyard to the north-east of Gwerclas Hall. They are mostly constructed of random rubble stone with slate roofs, though the north range has an asbestos roof. Many windows and doors are missing, and some buildings are in poor condition.

The western range, which is lofted and faces east into the courtyard, has a doorway slightly right of centre and a window opening to the left. A loft opening is positioned above the window, currently without glazing or a door. Further to the left, the range is ruined, with visible remains of the southern gable end on the south range. The north gable end has been truncated and replaced with corrugated iron sheeting, featuring two ground-floor openings and one loft opening. There are no openings to the west-facing external side.

The north range was originally a barn. It has a wide, full-height central opening on the south side, facing into the courtyard, that has been later infilled with masonry on the left and brickwork on the right. A cast iron bearing box, likely supporting a shaft from a stationary engine located within the building, has been inserted into the masonry section. To the left of the bearing box is a hole in the wall, infilled with brick, alongside a former window opening; further to the left are small ventilation slits. The west gable end features a wide opening offset to the left and large circular vents to both gables. There are also two high-level openings in the north wall.

To the east of the courtyard, an external boundary wall supports two single-storey animal houses. The animal house on the left is small, with a doorway on the left, and its roof is partially missing. The second building, to the right, is constructed of dressed masonry and has a doorway on the left with an unglazed overlight, a window to the right with a segmental brick head, and a further doorway to the left return. A wide opening is located far to the right.

The long south range has doorways to the left and centre of its courtyard-facing side; the central doorway has brick jambs and a concrete lintel. A part-glazed wooden window with a ventilator is positioned between the doorways. A long window, inserted in the 20th century, fills a former opening at the far right, using brick infill. The loft has a raked dormer to the left of centre, but lacks a hatch. The west gable end has a loft hatch covered with timber slats. The south external side features 20th-century openings, including garage doors, a door with brick jambs, a wooden window, a planked door with brick jambs, a four-pane window, and a loft hatch.

The west range was used as a milking shed in the 20th century, and remnants of metal stall partitions, a manger against the west wall, and concrete floors remain. The ceiling features three slightly chamfered cross beams and plain joists to the loft floor, which is accessed by a wooden ladder immediately to the right of the entrance.

The north range’s interior spans 5 bays, open to the roof with tie beam trusses, primarily held together with nails, and curved struts. Remaining metal-framed stall partitions and concrete floors are present. A cast iron bearing box is located on the internal north wall, aligned with the one on the external wall.
