Description

Carrog Uchaf is a 17th-century building constructed from roughly coursed and squared rubble, topped with slate roofs. It is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan. The oldest part of the building is oriented at right angles to the slope, while the rebuilt uphill section forms a long cross wing. The entrance to the original range faces west towards the angle with the wing and features a cyclopean doorway. To the left of the doorway is a small two-light ovolo moulded mullioned window, and to the right is a small fixed-light six-pane window. Two upper windows have been renewed in earlier stone surrounds. The rear elevation of this wing includes an ovolo moulded mullioned window and has an axial stack opposite the doorway.

The uphill cross wing has a later central entrance within a gabled porch, flanked by inserted four-light casement windows. Some original 17th-century windows remain at the rear of this range, including an ovolo moulded mullioned window to the northeast. The roof features three-light catslide dormers, with a gable end stack to the east and a front corner stack to the west.

Inside, the rear wing maintains its original layout, with a post and panel partition featuring a mid-rail that separates the kitchen from a smaller unheated room to the north. The kitchen has an axial fireplace with a stopped chamfer to the bressumer. Additionally, there is a post and panel partition enclosing the cellar stairs in the northwest corner of the kitchen. The south range of the house consists of a two-room plan with a central stair hall, which dates from 19th-century alterations. The stairs, likely relocated, are 17th-century and feature splat balusters. The eastern room has a chamfered spine beam with a bar stop to the chamfer and a large fireplace with a moulded mantle, supported by massive blocks of slate. The western room contains a corner fireplace and a small unheated service room at its rear.
