Description

The farm ranges at Ffynogion consist of two large ranges joined at the southwest corner, both with two full storeys. The S range, facing north into the farmyard, is built of white-washed brick under a corrugated asbestos roof. It features openings with timber lintels, containing boarded doors, loft hatches, and metal windows with ventilators. The ground floor has doorways with split doors, a window, an infilled opening, a doorway with a segmental brick head, two windows, a doorway with split doors, and a window with a segmental brick head at the far left. The tall loft storey has openings at different levels, not aligned with those below; from the right, a boarded door, then a two-light unglazed window immediately under the eaves. Towards the centre are four loft hatches, alternately under the eaves and at a lower level, with two ventilation slits to the left. The east gable end has a dovecote with ledges and holes, partly obscured by a lower cart-shed bay, also of white-washed brick under a corrugated asbestos roof, with a wide cart opening to the left and two vertically aligned small infilled openings to the right. Viewed from the interior of the main range, the east gable end shows two openings, while the rear has a small opening.

The W farm range faces east into the farmyard. The east front has been rebuilt with a steel frame, clad in timber boarding with wide steel doors, under a corrugated steel roof. The west side is of white-washed brick, with three doorways under segmental brick heads and ventilation slits. The loft has three metal windows with flat heads, likely from the early 20th century.

Adjoining the north gable end is a slightly lower two-storey unit, possibly a former stable with accommodation above. Constructed of white-washed brick to the east and west, with a north gable end of random stone, it is covered by a slate roof. The east front has a boarded door under a cambered brick head to the right; the upper storey has a six-pane metal window. The west side has a boarded door to the right under a cambered brick head. The north gable end has an unglazed ground floor window with timber slats, while the upper storey has a shallow two-light small-pane wooden window.

The interior of the S range retains its loft floor and ground floor ceiling, which has shallow-chamfered cross-beams and joists. It’s mainly open-plan but retains part of a later brick partition. The east range is probably six bays, with Queen-post trusses or tie-beam trusses with curved struts, all of pegged construction.
