Description
The Old China Shop, which includes China House, has origins dating back to around 1580 and is believed to have been a convent associated with the Parish Church. The building is constructed of rubble and features two storeys plus an attic, with a single window on the southwest front and northwest gable end. It has an undulating slate roof with a gable parapet and a contemporary rubble chimney stack, which has a brick capping and is now incorporated into Kirkside, a structure that has undergone significant alterations following a fire.
The front features a modern attic window and a small pane sash window on the first floor, both situated under a timber lintel. The shop front has an architrave with brick pilasters and a small pane sash window to the left, along with a modern half-glazed door. The gable end includes a tripartite stone mullion cross-framed attic window, a small pane sash window on the first floor, and a later tripartite fixed glazed window below.
To the left, there is a Victorian three-storey range with a curved corner, featuring a brick ground floor and a pebbledash upper floor, along with a brick cornice and band over the ground floor. It has small pane sash windows. An advanced gabled two-storey bay to the right incorporates a four-panel door entrance.
Inside the Old China Shop, there are stop-chamfered beams and a fireplace lintel, with the ground floor partitioned into offices. The drawing room of China House features a massive stop-chamfered beam and a narrow, irregularly shaped boarded door, which is said to lead to a Priest's Hole.
