Description
The lodge and gatepiers at the driveway to the Old Palace is a single-storey and attic brick structure, built in English Garden wall bond, likely dating from the same period as the Old Palace in 1791. It features a later squared rubble gable-ended front that probably corresponds with the enlargement of the Old Palace around 1830-1831. The building has a gable parapet and plinth, a slate roof, and a brick chimney stack that has been heightened in the style of Blore, complete with twin stone flues.
On the ground floor, there are paired small-pane sash windows with sandstone dressings and Tudor hoodmoulds. The right side has a rubble plinth with both sash and casement windows. A swept roof dormer on the left side contains casement windows, and below it is a small fixed glazed window with a dressed surround, located next to a pointed arch entrance that features a boarded door. The rear gable end is made of brick and includes casement windows along with a modern extension.
The gatepiers leading to the gated drive and Great Yard are connected to the lodge by narrow sections of brick wall topped with stone coping. To the left, there are 19th-century stone piers with finials, and the brick wall extends beyond, curving forward along the high street and ending at the entrance to a garden centre. On the right, there are plain pointed top gate piers and a cobbled drive that leads to a barn and stables.
