Description

The Former Farmhouse at Bryn Tangor is an agricultural range constructed from local slatey stone, featuring a roof that is partly asbestos and partly slate. The north half of the building, which includes two bays that date back to the medieval farmhouse, is a single-storey structure situated on level ground and has heck doors at the front. The south half is a lofted range designed for livestock, built on rising ground, and includes three heck doors and a loft hatch.

The section of the agricultural range that contains the two domestic bays is approximately 7 meters long and 6 meters wide, separated by a cruck truss. This truss features two large, well-shaped blades that extend from about waist height to the apex, with their feet embedded in the stonework. The blades measure about 175 by 400 millimeters at their thickest. A high collar beam is morticed into the blades, with arch braces on each side that are secured with multiple pegged tenons to both the collar beam and the blades. The soffit of the collar beam is notched at the center to accommodate the top ends of the braces. Above the collar beam, there is a short king post that is decoratively carved and morticed into the blades at the apex, with the blades meeting vertically. The arch braces and the blades below feature a staff moulding carved on the lower arris of each face. Stave holes above and below the collar beam indicate that a partition was once complete, and there are mortices beneath the arch braces on each side for two lost posts.

On the east side, two early purlins remain, while the west side has two modern purlins. There is no windbracing or any mortices for windbracing; instead, the truss is supported against racking by an inserted strut from the wall to the south.
