Description

Vivod is a house dating to the 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The south-western end of the house represents the earliest phase of construction and is built of simple rubble stone, while later sections are of snecked rubble. Red brick surrounds window and door openings, and some dressings are of freestone. The roof is slate, featuring slightly swept eaves and chimney stacks constructed of rubble, some of which have been heightened with brick. Gothic detailing is present on some elevations, achieved through the use of red brick pointed relieving arches.

The south-western entrance front is single-storey with a basement and attic, extending ten bays. The central 1+4-window arrangement likely reflects the original house. The front has steeply gabled dormers with horned sash windows, and unhorned camber-headed small-pane sashes to the ground floor. A two-window stepped advanced gable to the left is a later addition, constructed with snecked rubble and pointed relieving arches, and featuring horned small-pane windows. An extraordinary timber porte-cochere of what is believed to be Scandinavian origin occupies three bays to the right. It is characterised by gables with tall finials (including one depicting a ship) and patterned bargeboards; quatrefoil panels over Gothic open arches, with flat balusters below. A pointed arch freestone doorway provides access, with a boarded door.

The south-eastern side is two storeys and attic, with eight windows, built of rubble and featuring gables at each end and an advanced gabled bay in the centre, all incorporating pointed relieving arches. Twin windows to the right of the central bay have cambered heads and central shafts with carved capitals. The majority of windows are 12-pane sashes, with a tall stairwell window to the left. There are eroded bosses to the lintel of the central bay. The north-eastern side is taller, following the fall of the ground. The gable end of the south-eastern cross range has a five-light window with transoms, and the return side features a similar splayed bay with bosses to the parapet. The remainder of this two-storey, basement and attic side has small-pane sashes and predominantly non-snecked rubble. A range projects forward to the north-west, with a four-window elevation facing the garden. The north-western side overlooks a service courtyard and exhibits similar detailing, including a pointed arch doorway with a stilted hoodmould, and gabled dormers over each bay. A service range leads off at a splayed angle and is single-storey and attic with gables, snecked rubble, sliding sashes to the ground floor, and casements above, all small-paned. A store to the right connects to a west-facing range, which rises to meet the driveway, which is bordered by a rubble and brick boundary wall.

Inside, the staircase hall is open to the roof with simple trusses. The stairs have chamfered newels. The main entrance is effectively at first floor level. A white marble fireplace with foliage detail is located in the drawing room. A notable feature is the narrow panelling to the ceilings. The former billiard room is fully wainscotted.
