Description
Rhyl No.1 Signal Box is a tall three-storey, four-bay structure dating from the late 19th century. It features a gabled roof covered with slates, complete with flush bargeboards and inset finials positioned directly above the weatherboarding of the operating floor. The long sides of the building have oversailing eaves and a cantilevered catwalk supported by metal brackets that extend towards the trackside. The operating room is fitted with four-pane timber sliding sash windows arranged in a continuous band.
The lower storeys are constructed of variegated red brickwork, accented with blue brick sill bands and paired cambered-headed windows set within two-storey panels that include header corbels. On the rear elevation, the top storey has two short sections of cantilevered walkways leading to windows, along with a cantilevered cubicle on the west gable end, which is accessed by a vertical ladder and a boarded door. The lever frames have been removed.
