Description
Totnes Signal Box is a two-storey structure built of red brick with black brick dressings. It features a hipped roof covered in slate, with eaves brackets and ventilators at the ridge. The building has a rectangular shape and its principal elevation faces southeast towards the tracks. The upper floor has splayed corners to enhance visibility down the platform. The former operating room on the first floor is mostly glazed on this elevation and at the northeast end. The windows are timber horizontal sliding sashes, all divided by glazing bars, and slightly jettied on brackets. To the right of center, there is a projecting bay with two sets of paired sliding sashes in a timber surround, which has panelling below the windows. The ground floor contains five regularly spaced windows with segmental heads, featuring surrounds made of contrasting black brick. The lower courses of the brickwork and the corners of the front elevation also use contrasting brick. Access to the former operating room is provided by a doorway on the southwest side wall, reached by a modern steel staircase. Inside, the operating equipment, including the lever frame, has been removed.
