Pair Of Warehouses Immediately North Of Alpha Terrace

This is a pair of adjoining warehouses located immediately north of Alpha Terrace in Totnes, dating from the early 19th century, with an extension added in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of limestone and stone rubble, featuring redbrick dressings, and have a two-span gable-ended roof covered in corrugated asbestos sheets.

The plan consists of two adjoining warehouses, with the longer right-hand (east) warehouse likely built in the early 19th century, while the left-hand (west) warehouse was added in the mid-19th century. The front and back walls are not parallel, accommodating the narrowing site to the west.

The exterior rises to three storeys and features two gabled fronts. Each front has loading doors at the center on all floors; the right door has a timber lintel, while the left door features a cambered brick arch and a cast-iron hoist. Flanking the loading doors are small square windows with cambered brick arches, although the ground floor windows have been blocked. All windows have late 19th or 20th-century replacement frames. The west elevation includes a wide ground floor doorway with a small loading door above it, and the east side has later lean-tos. The interior has not been inspected.
