Description

The Pillar of Eliseg is a Grade I listed sandstone cross, approximately 2.41 meters high. The upper part of the cross is broken and missing, having been thrown down during the Civil War. It is set in a socket on a large flat base that measures approximately 1.65 meters by 1.65 meters and is 0.42 meters thick. The cross originally featured a long inscription of 31 lines in round half-uncial script, which was recorded by Edward Llwyd in 1696. Unfortunately, this inscription is now almost invisible. There is an additional inscription on the northeast face that notes the cross was re-erected in 1780 by T Lloyd de Trevor.
