Description

Caer'afallen is a large two-storey house dating from the 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure set on a stone plinth, topped with a slate roof. The gable end walls to the north and west are constructed of large blocks of coursed stone, which support moulded brick stacks, although the stack on the west side has been lost. The house consists of a short range to the south and a cross-gabled long range to the east.

The south range has a lobby entrance with a 19th-century half-hipped porch in front of a star-shaped stack. The close-studded framing has a mid-rail and jetties out to the first floor. The windows, which may be in their original positions, are 19th-century casements with lattice glazing. To the right of the porch is the gabled end of the long south range, which features close-studding on the ground floor, interrupted by a shallow projecting bay window. The upper storey has decorative framing with chevrons on either side of a shallow oriel window, and in the gable apex, with window details similar to those below.

The long south range also has a star-shaped brick ridge stack near the angle of the two ranges and is similarly close-studded with a mid-rail at each storey. Some interruptions in the framing suggest the positions of earlier openings, while the present windows are mostly casements with small-paned iron glazing.

The rear of the east range is made of white-washed brick and features three-light small-pane wooden casements on each storey, along with a two-light casement on the upper right, all under segmental brick heads. The rear of the south range has a lean-to stone porch under a slate roof at the angle of the ranges, which contains a glazed door and a window above the porch. To the right, there is a full-height outshut with a central gabled dormer that has a two-light casement with quarries, and a small brick stack on the roof pitch. The ground floor of the outshut has a continuous lean-to porch with a slate roof, containing a door flanked by shallow windows. The west gable end has a 20th-century wooden window in the upper left, with farm ranges joining below.

The interior has not been seen during the recent survey, but it is reported to contain good 17th-century ceilings with ornate stops to the spine and cross beams.
