Description

Dedwyddfa is an asymmetrical house constructed in 1886, built in the Domestic Revival style. The main house is two storeys with attics, with a south-facing gable as the entrance front, a west-facing garden front, and a rear wing to the east. The house is built of red brick with slate roofs, featuring an external brick stack with a fluted shaft on the south gable end (there was originally a matching stack on the north gable). Architectural details include a dentil brick string course at the first floor level, blue diamond brickwork on the upper storey, raised stone copings and kneelers to the gables, and ball finials at each apex. Windows are framed by yellow sandstone with chamfered mullions, some with transoms, housing iron casements with horizontal glazing bars. The south gable entrance is on the right with a moulded sandstone doorcase enclosing a nine-panel wooden door with strap hinges; a shaped tablet above displays "1886" in relief. A flat-roofed wooden porch canopy is supported by scrolled brackets on stone corbels. To the left of the entrance is an external stack with an offset on the right-hand side, and further to the left, a small light with quarries and margin glazing. The upper storey has a two-light casement with a dripmould above the entrance, and the attic features a two-light casement. The garden front is a two-window range, with a full-height canted bay to the left featuring continuous parapets projecting through the eaves and a Flemish gable to an attic dormer topped with a ball finial. The canted bay has three cross-windows on the ground floor and three two-light casements on the first floor; the attic dormer has a two-light window with quarries. To the right of the canted bay are four-light windows, with the ground-floor window transomed. The north gable end has a cross-window on the ground floor right; a tall, three-light transomed stairlight to the left at mid-level features quarries and pink margin glazing, with a small single light positioned beneath. The attic has a two-light casement with quarries. The lower wing to the east is single storey with an attic, distinguished by a large fluted ridge stack. Its south side, where it angles with the main range, incorporates a bay window with a slate roof, featuring a cross-window to the front and a transomed light to the canted return. The rear (north) side contains a large segmental-arched opening now fitted with glazed double doors, and a single light with a dripmould to the left. A lean-to kitchen extends from the east side, featuring a 20th-century gabled porch and wooden casement windows, some with segmental brick heads. The interior includes a full-length stair hall with reception rooms to the left and a study and service rooms to the right. A dog-leg staircase is located to the right of the stair hall, with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. The staircase protrudes slightly from the stairlight, allowing light to the attic. Further details include panelled doors with a distinctive moulding, fireplaces with wood-panelled chimney pieces incorporating similar mouldings and bracketed mantelpieces, and ceilings with moulded coving and foliate roses. Attic trusses incorporate posts set in from the walls.
