Description
This is a terrace of five houses, located at 5, 7, 9, 11, and 15 Pen y Bryn Road. The houses were built in the 20th century, following an east-west alignment along Pen y Bryn Road, though offset from this line. The stepped elevation responds to the rising ground to the west.
The houses are constructed of dark brown facing brick, with internal thermal insulating block, and white painted horizontal bands of timber boarding at the eaves and above openings. The arrangement of the timber boarding is irregular, and, combined with the staggered planning, creates a rhythm that breaks up the brickwork. The roofs are flat, formed from structural cedar boarding, which is visible internally as ceilings, and covered with insulating materials and aluminium sheet. The roofs of numbers 7 and 9 have been replaced with zinc sheeting to maintain a similar appearance. Original timber pivot windows with large pane glazing are present throughout, draught-proofed and single glazed, except for those at number 15 which are double glazed. Projecting slate window cills are also present.
The terrace is arranged in a staggered east-west plan, with each house projecting forward, and with L-plans for each house except number 7. This provides privacy to the front area and enclosed rear gardens. Number 5, at the eastern end, is single-storeyed with a small rear extension. It has a projecting window bay to the left and a projecting garage to the right, with the roofline rising to the right toward number 7. Number 7 is the only two-storeyed house, with living areas on the upper floor, and a lower floor built into the rising ground. The façade features a wide window over the garage, and a band of double and two single windows across the centre. The rear elevation has a band of four windows and a balcony to the rear over the garage, with a window and door set back. Number 9 rises slightly above number 7 and projects further forward, and features a wide window to the left, a central window and door, and a garage to the right. Numbers 11 and 15 continue the staggered arrangement, with a window bay to the left and a projecting garage/entrance to the right. The rears of numbers 9, 11, and 15 are characterised by extensive full-height glazing opening onto the gardens, along with large windows and rear garage doors. Number 15 retains an original greenhouse and outbuilding.
Interiors of numbers 9 and 15 were inspected and have open plan living areas combining kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Features include exposed timber boarded ceilings with heavy joists, brickwork piers, and plain plastered walls. The flooring is a mix of solid concrete and suspended timber. The joinery is plain, and original heating systems including a warm air system from a gas fired heater (number 9) and a gas fired central heating system with radiators (number 15) remain. The interiors of numbers 5, 7, and 11 were not inspected.
