Description
Nos 58-64 Abergele Road with No 1 Rhiw Bank Avenue is a three-storey building with attics, finished in roughcast render with smooth rendered dressings and a slate roof with tiled cresting. The principal elevation to Abergele Road comprises a three-window range with an advanced gable to the right and a narrow later addition of around 1930 to the left.
The main range features two canted oriel windows to the first floor, each with modillion cornices, though the glazing has been renewed. The upper storey windows were originally four-pane sashes but have also been renewed within their original openings. A round-arched attic window sits beneath a steep dormer gable to the left, which is finished with bargeboards and a finial. The advanced gable to the right has a similar canted oriel window, paired four-pane sash windows above, and a round-arched window in the gable apex. The small extension to the left has flat-headed mullioned windows.
The ground floor contains projecting shop fronts dating from around 1930 with heavy detailing, including modillion cornices and deep fascias. The right-hand unit features glass lettering, slender brackets with corbel heads and a dragon finial. Both shops have curved display windows with recessed entrances and leaded upper panes with stained glass pictures depicting ships, windmills and similar subjects. The shop front in the right-hand gable is of somewhat earlier date and employs an arcaded design with segmentally arched windows and doorway. Cast iron columns with capitals support brackets with foliate spandrels that carry a glazed canopy.
The return elevation to Rhiw Bank Avenue features canted bay windows alternating with four-pane sashes, and a central entrance set beneath a gable.
