Description

Nos 58-64 (even) Abergele Road with No 1 Rhiw Bank Avenue, Colwyn Bay

A three-storey building with attics, rendered in roughcast with smooth rendered dressings and a slate roof with tiled cresting. The main elevation to Abergele Road presents a three-window range with an advanced gable to the right and a narrow extension (circa 1930) to the left.

The principal three-window range features two canted oriel windows to the first floor, each with modillion cornices, though the glazing has been renewed. The upper storey originally had four-pane sash windows in their original openings, since renewed. A round-arched attic window sits beneath a steep dormer gable to the left, which is finished with bargeboards and a finial. The advanced gable to the right contains a similar canted oriel window, paired four-pane sash windows above it, and a round-arched window at the gable apex. The left-hand extension has flat-headed mullioned windows.

The ground floor includes projecting shop fronts dating from circa 1930 with heavy detailing: a modillion cornice, deep fascia with glass lettering to the right-hand unit, and slender brackets with corbel heads and dragon finial. Each shop has curved display windows with recessed entrances. The upper panes of the windows are leaded, some containing stained glass pictures of ships, windmills and similar motifs. The shop front within the right-hand gable is of an earlier type, featuring arcaded segmentally arched windows and doorway with cast iron columns bearing capitals and brackets with foliate spandrels that carry a glazed canopy.

The return elevation to Rhiw Bank Avenue displays canted bay windows alternating with four-pane sashes, and a central entrance beneath a gable.
