Description

Nos 58-64 (even) Abergele Road with No 1 Rhiw Bank Avenue, Colwyn Bay, form a group of late 19th-century buildings with 20th-century shop fronts.

The main structure is finished in roughcast render with smooth rendered dressings, covered by a slate roof with tiled cresting. It rises three storeys with attics. The Abergele Road elevation displays a three-window range with an advanced gable to the right and a narrow addition dating from around 1930 to the left. The main range features two canted oriel windows to the first floor, each with modillion cornices and renewed glazing. The upper storey windows were originally 4-pane sashes, now renewed in their original openings. A round-arched attic window sits beneath a steep dormer gable to the left, which has bargeboards with a finial. The advanced gable to the right contains a similar canted oriel window, paired 4-pane sash windows above it, and a round-arched window at the gable apex. The small extension to the left has flat-headed mullioned windows.

The ground-floor shop fronts date from around 1930 and project forward with heavy detailing including modillion cornices, deep fascias with glass lettering to the right-hand unit, and slender brackets with corbel heads and a dragon finial. Both shops have curved display windows with recessed entrances. The windows contain leaded upper panes, some with stained glass pictures depicting ships, windmills and similar subjects. The shop front within the right-hand gable is an earlier type, featuring arcaded segmentally arched windows and doorway, with cast iron columns bearing capitals and brackets with foliate spandrels that support a glazed canopy.

The return elevation to Rhiw Bank Avenue shows canted bay windows alternating with 4-pane sashes, with a central entrance beneath a gable.
