Description
Llety'r Dryw is a house dating from the 17th century, built in a style that interprets Northern English vernacular architecture. The construction uses rock-faced random rubble with red sandstone dressings and a slate roof with red-tiled cresting. Red brick axial stacks are topped with stone caps. The main range features wide, coped gables with finials, accompanied by cross wings. A separately gabled porch is set against the inner angle of the left-hand gable. Above the doorway is a stepped hood mould with an ornamented lintel incorporating the date and the initials E over J&J V. Narrow, paired 2-light mullioned windows flank the doorway, with further mullioned windows of 2 and 3 lights above. A continuous string course runs above the ground floor, and flat hood moulds are present over the upper windows. The recessed central range contains a 4-light mullioned and transomed hall window, featuring round heads to the upper lights, and a 2-light window in a high gabled dormer above. An advanced right-hand gable showcases a 3-light mullioned and transomed window with round-headed upper lights on the ground floor, alongside 2-light windows above, with windows throughout being metal casements.
A service extension with a hipped roof is set against the left-hand gable return and projects onto the garden front, forming an open loggia. The garden front mirrors the entrance front in its disposition, with wide outer gables. The east wing features paired 2-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor, the hood mould functioning as a continuous string course, topped with a 3-light mullioned window above. A back door is set within a plain chamfered architrave with side lights in the angle of the main range, above which is a 3-light mullioned and transomed stair window. Paired mullioned windows are located to the right of the main range, with similar windows in a gabled dormer above. The right-hand (west) gable features paired windows of 2 and 3 lights in plain stone architraves. A full-height gabled canted bay window is found in the east gable return.
Inside, the entrance lobby leads to a narrow hall running along the front of the house, with principal rooms in the east wing and to the rear. Service rooms and a secondary staircase are located in the west wing. The hall contains a wood fireplace with the date and initials of John Eden. The staircase opens off the hall to the rear, featuring turned balusters and reeded square newels. A rear room of the wing, formerly the morning room, showcases a 17th-century style fireplace with a panelled overmantle. A stone 4-centred arched fireplace is found in the rear room of the main range, previously the dining room. Original joinery has been preserved throughout, including characteristic horizontal deep moulded panelling to doors and window embrasures.
