Description
The L-shaped agricultural range at Belmont is a late 18th-century storied complex constructed of rubble with slate roofs and cambered red brick heads over the ground-floor openings. The main range runs north-south and consists of three sections, featuring an advanced central barn flanked by byre and stable sections, all under a continuous roof. The central barn is symmetrical, with large opposing entrances; the rear entrance is smaller and has modern flanking buttresses. There are two tiers of ventilation slits and two unglazed square windows on the upper floor beneath the eaves.
The right section of the range has three standard entrances, with the two on the right converted into unglazed window openings, and two additional unglazed windows under the eaves. The left section mirrors this, featuring an entrance on the right and two windows on the left, which have modern glazing. The upper floor openings are similar to those on the right section, and there is a tall loading bay in the left corner.
Adjoining at right angles to the top of the main range is a subsidiary arm that runs east-west. This section includes an entrance on the left with flanking windows, one of which is blocked while the other is unglazed. On the right, there are two entrances: the first is a wide carriage entrance with an opposing arch, creating an access tunnel, and the second is a standard entrance set into an arched recess of the same size as the carriage entrance. There are five square windows under the eaves, some boarded and others with modern glazing. A plain brick chimney is located at the center right. External stepped access leads to an upper boarded and studded door that is deeply recessed on the left gable end. The rear roof pitch of this section is covered with corrugated iron. A modern barn is attached to the rear of the north-south arm.
Inside, the three-bay central and right sections of the north-south range feature pegged tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and the former has a slate-flagged floor. There is a dividing wall within the left section.
