Description
The Sett Makers Huts at New Bank, located at Penmaenmawr Quarry, include an early 20th-century counterbalance incline drumhouse and a series of sett makers' huts. The drumhouse is built of snecked rubble and features wide buttressing on the gable ends that face the partly disturbed incline. The roof is made of timber planking, and within the thick gable walls, the original pine drum and steel cables are still in place, along with an external brake mechanism.
To the east of the drumhouse, there are seven contemporary sett makers' huts or cubicles where quarried stone was processed into setts. These huts are also constructed from snecked rubble and are open at the front. They have dividing walls, with the two northernmost huts sharing a supporting pillar but lacking a dividing wall. Each cubicle includes a tool niche in the rear wall, and one wall features graffiti dated 1921. The roofs of the huts are flat and made of mid-20th-century concrete.
