Description
The Roman Catholic Church of the Lady of the Rosary and attached former Minister's House, Penmaenmawr, form a listed group.
The chapel is a 5-bay rectangular building constructed of snecked rubble with Penmaenmawr granite dressings and a shallow hipped slate roof. The 3-bay symmetrical facade is the principal elevation, featuring Tuscan giant order columns supporting a Classical entablature with modillion treatment. A coped parapet rises above, with 4 spaced ball finials corresponding to the orders below. The frieze bears the inscription 'Domus Dei et Porta Coeli' (Genesis xxviii.17). A central raised cartouche surmounts the parapet, dated 1867, with a plain iron cross above.
The central entrance is set within a plain, full-height arched recess, with a moulded architrave and plain bracketed entablature. The doors are recessed 8-panelled double doors. Flanking windows sit above a moulded cill-course, featuring moulded and pedimented architraves with multi-pane sash windows with marginal glazing. The long sides of the chapel contain 5 similar windows, though without pediments, each with projecting stone cills. Wooden bracketing supports the oversailing eaves.
The former Minister's House adjoins the chapel to the rear, set back slightly behind a dwarf walled forecourt. It is constructed of the same materials and features a hipped roof with oversailing, bracketed eaves. The near-symmetrical 3-bay front has a central recessed entrance with a part-glazed boarded door. To the left is a large contemporary recessed sash window of 4 panes with marginal glazing and projecting slate cill. To the right of the entrance are part-glazed modern double doors, now boarded up, which formerly occupied a window opening of the original type. Three further similar sashes appear on the first floor. To the rear is a contemporary service lean-to extension with a modern flat-roofed extension beyond. A squat stock brick chimney with one contemporary ceramic pot is present.
The interior was not accessible at the time of inspection in July 1995.
