Description

Incline Drumhouse and Sett Makers Huts at Penmaenmawr Quarry

Early C20 counterbalance incline drumhouse; snecked rubble construction with wide buttressing to the gable ends facing the (partly disturbed) incline; timber planking to the roof. The pine drum and steel cables remain in situ between the thick gable walls and the brake mechanism survives externally.

Adjoining the drumhouse to the E a series of 7 contemporary sett makers' huts or cubicles, where the quarried stone would be worked into setts. Snecked rubble construction, open to the front (E) and with dividing walls (the 2 furthest N have a shared supporting pillar, though no dividing wall). Each cubicle has a tool niche in the rear wall; graffiti dated 1921 survives on one wall. Flat, mid C20 concrete roof.
