Description
The causeway at Pont Newydd, partly located in the Pentrefoelas community, is a Grade II listed structure that raises over a marshy area and the river. It features a low arch at the northern end and a full bridge at the southern end, constructed from rubble stonework. The main bridge has a single segmental arch that spans 8.1 meters, consisting of a single ring of voussoirs that are 0.56 meters deep, topped by a regulating course, and rises to a central keystone 2.4 meters above the water level. The spandrels are flush. The northern bridge is similar but lower, with its parapet replaced by railings. In the 20th century, both bridges were widened with a cranked concrete slab, on which the parapets were rebuilt, featuring flush iron-cramped copings. The carriageway is humped and measures 3 meters wide between the 0.4-meter thick parapets.
