Description
Bwthyn-y-Bryn is a one-and-a-half storey T-shaped house located at Bryn Eisteddfod in Llansanffraid Glan Conwy. The building is constructed of part-rough-cast rubble and features a slate roof. It has twin off-set brick chimneys on the west gable, dating from the 1830s, with moulded capping, and an additional off-set chimney at the center front of the main facade. The central entrance is modern and is flanked by 6-pane casements. This entrance area was altered in the early 19th century to provide access for stables but has been reverted to its original form in this century. To the right, there is a tripartite modern paned casement, and above, two 6-pane casements are set within gabled dormers that have plain bargeboards.
On the northeast gable, which faces the service court, there is an early 20th-century garage door, with earlier brick relieving arches above it. A 3-light wooden window with mullions and transoms, featuring leaded glass and a cambered head, is located at the gable apex, along with a weathervane from around 1912. The rear of the house has a gabled projecting wing that includes a stepped, mullioned window on the upper floor with a returned, moulded plaster label from the 1830s, and a 9-pane window beneath it, also with a cambered head. A geometrical stone finial crowns the gable apex, dating to 1912. Additionally, there is a later 19th-century brick lean-to on the west gable end.
The garage extension is positioned between the eastern arm of the main house and the rear projecting wing, facing the service court and extending in front of the east gable of the house. It is built of snecked rough-dressed stone with ashlar detailing, featuring a kneelered and finialed gable parapet with slate coping and a slate roof. The garage has two large entrances with boarded double doors and prominent timber lintels. Above these, there is a large central recessed 3-light mullioned and transomed wooden leaded window, along with two small 2-light leaded windows on the south face.
Inside the house, the hall on the ground floor to the right has a chamfered beamed ceiling, plain joists, and a slightly curved, stopped-chamfered bressummer over the inglenook. There is a single-flight slate staircase, and in the former stable section, there are two early 19th-century pine loosebox partitions.
