Description
This is a two-storey library building constructed in 1910, designed in the Baroque style and built from Bath stone. The ground floor is channelled, and the building features a hipped slate roof with small pane casement glazing. It has three bays, with a parapet that is partially pierced by a balustrade. There are pilasters at the ends and corners, which include concave recesses. The central bay is canted and topped with a segmental pediment, featuring a window with concave sides and Doric columns at the first floor level. The ground floor has an open porch supported by Ionic columns, with niches flanking the doorway. The outer bays have windows at the first floor level that include keystones, while the ground floor windows are set back in arched surrounds with hollow chamfers and have aprons beneath projecting sills.
Inside, there is a fine lobby with a mosaic floor and a stone balustraded stair leading to the rear. The ground floor ceiling has a circular opening with an iron balustrade, supported by Ionic columns. The first floor features a saucer dome on Doric columns. Facing the street, the reference library on the first floor showcases Baroque detailing, with a barrel vaulted ceiling and a modillion cornice, while paired pilasters frame an oriel window.
