Description
The former farmhouse at Gwern Felin dates from the 18th century but has earlier origins. Evidence at the rear indicates that it was originally a single-storey sub-Medieval dwelling, which was raised and modified in the second half of the 18th century. An attached byre and cart bay are located at the lower eastern end of the building. The structure is made of whitened rubble with boulder foundations and features an old slate roof, along with plain, squat end chimneys.
The entrance is near the center and has a recessed boarded door with a projecting dripstone above. There are window openings flanking the entrance on both floors, with the first-floor windows located under the eaves. A 19th-century four-pane casement window is present at the rear, where the boulder-built ground floor masonry is visible. At the southern rear, there is a single-storey pitched-roof extension that forms an 'L' shape with the main house. This extension is constructed similarly, featuring a boarded entrance and a 20th-century window on the eastern face.
To the east of the farmhouse, there is a stepped-down byre and cart bay, which is contemporary or nearly contemporary to the farmhouse. This structure has a large plain cart entrance on the left and a standard entrance on the right, which includes two boulder steps and a part-stable door.
Inside the main hall, there is a slate-flagged floor and a beamed ceiling with plain joists and beams. To the right of the entrance, there is a boarded draft screen with shelving at the rear. A large inglenook fireplace is located to the right, featuring a flat bressummer and a bracketed mantelshelf above. To the left in the hall, there is a plain 19th-century staircase with stick balusters and a boarded cupboard underneath. The parlour room also has a beamed ceiling, while the rear pantry extension has a flagged floor and slate shelving.
