Description
Ye Olde Bull Inn is a late 17th century or 18th century inn that has seen additions and alterations in the second quarter of the 19th century and later. Originally built in an L-plan, it has been extended to the west and east. The building is constructed of whitened rubble with slate roofs and features plain rendered end chimneys on the main front range, along with an additional end chimney on the extended bay to the west.
The inn has a nearly symmetrical two-storey, three-window primary block with steps leading up to a central entrance. The entrance features a slightly-recessed 20th-century boarded and studded door with an exposed timber lintel above. Flanking the entrance are second-quarter 19th-century sash windows, which have 16 panes, are slightly recessed, and have projecting cills and timber lintels. There are three similar windows on the first floor under the eaves. To the far right on the ground floor, there is a vertical slit window with a glazing bar and a lintel matching the others. There is also a further boarded door leading to the continuous extended bay on the right, which has a 24-pane sash window beyond, and a four-part modern window on the first floor.
Inside, the ceiling features roughly-chamfered beams with plain joists, some of which have been replaced. Although there is evidence of former partitioning, the bar currently occupies the full length of the ground floor of the primary range. The floor is slate-flagged, though mostly carpeted. The front-facing windows have splayed reveals with plank seats. There is a large inglenook fireplace to the right with a flat, chamfered bressummer, and a smaller fireplace to the left gable end with a hewn oak lintel. The rear range has two bays and features a rough pegged collar truss.
