Description

The walls, steps, terraces, and gate surrounding the water garden at Bodysgallen Hall date from the 18th century and form an irregularly shaped area, approximately 20 meters square. The structure features high L-plan walls to the northeast and northwest that support the ground next to the house. A low wall along the southern side retains the water garden above the former kitchen garden. The high wall on the northeast side has a replacement rubble coping over a raised band.

Adjacent to this wall is a stone-walled and paved terrace with steps at both ends. The wall includes an inserted Tudor arch, with four narrow ventilation strips to the right, which are linked to an underground chamber accessed through a replacement door immediately to the right of the main arch. The arch also provides access to quarter-turn stone steps leading up to the level of the house. The northeast wall features a return at the southeast end that meets Mulberry Cottage at the southwest end of the Dutch Garden, which is listed separately.

The northwest wall is partly built on bedrock and has simple square piers where it is interrupted by stone steps. These steps are arranged in two flights and are flanked by a stone parapet that curves out at the bottom. At the southwest end of this wall, there is a wall oriented roughly north-south, which is stepped and has replacement slate coping. This wall includes a pointed doorway and a late 19th-century iron gate, leading to stone steps down to the kitchen garden. Along the southern side of the water garden, there are split retaining walls between a stone-paved terrace, which also features stone steps at either end.
