Description
The agricultural ranges at Ty Du Farm date from the 19th century and enclose a courtyard to the northeast of the farmhouse, with the southwest corner open. They are constructed of red brick with slate roofs and feature dogstooth brickwork at the eaves. The northern range is one-and-a-half storeys high, while the other ranges are single storey.
The short western range has two camber-headed doorways facing the yard, with a contemporary lean-to extending to the left. There is a similar entrance on its southern face, and all doors are boarded. The northern range features two wide cambered openings flanked by narrower, similar openings, along with three small cambered windows above that have internal boarded shutters. To the right, there is a flush barn section with wide and narrow entrances, and brick ventilators with geometric shapes at the rear.
The eastern range, serving as a cart shed, has three open cambered arches facing west away from the yard, which has a cobbled pavement. Slightly stepped down and set back from this range to the right (south) is a stable block with two entrances, also with stable doors, and small windows and vents facing outward. The southern range joins at right angles and has three wide arched cart openings to the courtyard, with the two westernmost openings having later brick infill. There is a rear cambered entrance with a boarded door, and towards the west of this range, an off-centre brick chimney with oversailing courses serves the former brewhouse.
The three-bay northern range includes a barn and hayloft above, supported by king-post roof trusses with diagonal struts. To the right, there is an adjoining open barn of six bays, which previously had pulleys for machinery against the rear wall, powered by a steam engine located in a power room to the left. The barn features a flagged threshing floor and a sliding door in the southern wall leading to the eastern range, which contains stalls and a cobbled floor in the stable section. The former brewhouse and workshop still have an oven and original fittings.
