Description

Capel Rehoboth is a chapel dating from 1833, with additions in 1876, built in a simplified Classical style. The building has a rectangular plan and is constructed of rock-faced snecked rubble blocks with tooled ashlar dressings, covered by a slate roof. The gabled entrance front has three bays and features alternating quoins, a string course, a moulded cornice, and an upper string course leading to a coped pediment. The upper portion contains round-headed window openings in plain pilastered surrounds, with keystones to the left and right of a central round-headed Venetian window. This central window is supported by polished shafts with Corinthian capitals and contains sash windows with margin lights and coloured glass roundels. The ground floor has square-headed sash windows with margin lights, flanked by a three-bay shallow porch with a slate capping and round-headed openings. Recessed six-panel doors with fanlights are located within the outer openings, while the centre contains a fixed-light window with margin lights and coloured glass. A semi-circular slate stone above the cornice, with a scrolled surround, reads "REHOBOTH/ ADEILADWYD 1833/ AILADEILADWYD 1876”. A small, louvred round-headed opening sits directly above the upper string course, surmounted by a stone finial with a wrought-iron cross to the gable. The rendered return walls include four sashes to each floor, following the pattern of those on the front elevation but without the surrounds. A lean-to structure attached to the rear gable, representing a former Sunday School, has three twelve-paned sashes to its rear wall. A former manse is attached to the rear right corner of the chapel.

The imposing galleried interior features a flat ribbed plaster ceiling with a moulded cornice, floral motifs, boarded panels with decorative fretwork to the borders, and a large plaster rose to the centre with a richly decorated pendant lantern. There are box pews on the ground floor and an impressive set fawr (pulpit area) with turned balusters enclosing the reading desk, chairs, and inlaid pulpit. Behind the set fawr is a blind Venetian plaster arch with fluted Corinthian pilasters and a painted key-block. A panelled gallery with raked seating is supported on five cast-iron columns. A Victorian clock overlooks the set fawr. The window surrounds are moulded with console brackets, and the entrance lobby contains opposing round-headed arches with consoles at the base of staircases with turned newels and stick balusters, leading to the gallery. Six-panel doors flank a central rose window with coloured glass, situated below a marble memorial commemorating the First World War. Benches from the 19th century are present in the Sunday School.
