Description

Pen-y-Bryn Barn is a 17th-century barn constructed from roughly coursed slabs of slate rubble, with a higher quality of masonry on the long side facing the house. Some of the slabs are inscribed with 'R' or a reversed 'R'. The barn features steeply-pitched gable ends with kneelers and is covered by a slate roof. Ventilation slits on the long sides have deep splays leading to the interior. Each long side has an asymmetrically placed broad doorway with a segmental arch made of long slate voussoirs and a slate hoodmould supported by corbels above. The doorways have double doors made of broad planks, with some original iron strap hinges; on the northeast side, the right door of the pair is a repaired original that includes old graffiti with 'R' and reversed 'R'. The northwest gable end has a central low doorway leading to cattle stalls, also featuring long thin voussoirs for the segmental arch, and three ventilation openings near the apex of the gable. The long side opposite the house has a later small door set at the eaves.

The barn consists of five bays and has an original roof structure supported by four trusses with collars and tie-beams, along with trenched purlins. The threshing floor is made of slate slabs, which may not be original, while the rest of the barn is floored with probably original slabs or cobbles. The northwest end contains timber cattle stalls, separated from the barn by a plank and muntin partition, with a loft above and a cobbled floor.
