Description
The telephone call box at Ynysypandy is a red-painted cast-iron kiosk dating from the early 20th century. It features two glazed sides, a blank rear, and a wooden door with an inserted glazed iron panel. The door is located on the west face, opposite the back panel, and is hinged on the left, classified as door type A according to Diagram EC1324 of Specification D1140Q. The kiosk has a square plan with a slightly raised plinth and horizontal glazing on each side, divided by marginal bars.
At the top, there are four opalescent panels beneath a shallow Soaneian domed roof, which includes lunettes, each adorned with an embossed Tudor crown. The opalescent panels display the word ‘TELEPHONE’ in monolingual lettering. The Tudor crowns are flat-bottomed and oval-less, a style that was exclusively used by Macfarlane & Co on the K6 Mark 2. The rear panel is of the K6 Mark 2 type, featuring asymmetrical cable run-in holes at the base on either side of the manufacturer's plate, which reads:
MACFARLANE & Co Ltd
SARACEN FOUNDRY
GLASGOW
Inside, the call box has been modernized with updated receiver equipment and a shelf for a telephone directory, along with a half-cylinder power cover from the 1970s.
