Description

This is a house and byre range, likely dating back to the 17th century, with a later cottage addition. The main block is built of rubble construction and has a contemporary, slightly recessed byre attached to the southwest. A further byre addition was built later in the 17th century to the northeast. The primary block sits partly on boulder foundations and has a later rubble and boulder buttress located to the left, in front of a former window. An off-centre entrance to the house has a boarded door under a timber lintel; a window opening to the left now has a modern window. The southwest byre has a steeply-pitched slate roof and a stable door to the left. Stone steps lead to an upper loading bay at the right gable end, featuring an original pegged oak doorcase and boarded door. The left byre has a 19th-century boarded door and doorcase, and a window opening at the junction with a 19th-century cottage addition. Two small original window openings are located at the rear of the house, with one having a timber lintel. A 6-pane 19th-century window is situated at the rear of the northeast byre.

The two-storey, two-window cottage is built of rubble with a slate roof, end chimneys, plain cornices and weather coursing. A central entrance has a boarded door, and recessed 12-pane sash windows occupy both floors, except for a modern window on the upper right. Projecting slate sills are present, and a contemporary 6-pane fixed stair-light sits diagonally above the entrance to the right. A part-glazed modern door and a 6-pane sash window (with tall lower panes) are centrally located at the rear, with modern windows to the left of the rear door on both floors.

Inside the house-and-byre section, the house has a two-bay interior with a large inglenook fireplace to the left, featuring a chamfered inglebeam. A later doorway through the fireplace leads into the byre section. The beamed ceiling displays run-out stops and chamfering, likely inserted in the late 17th century. A section of post-and-panel partition screen remains to the left of the entrance, originally defining the hall and parlour spaces. A primary entrance to the right-hand byre section is through the southwest gable wall. Both byre sections have two bays and original tie-beam trusses.
