Description
Hafodty is a 2-storey, 2-bay dwelling with rubble construction, featuring massive quoins and a prominent boulder plinth. The building has slate roofs and rubble chimney stacks at both ends, complete with weathercoursing. It consists of a low-end dwelling, a single-storey domestic section in the middle known as the Music Room, and a single-storey, 1-bay unit at the uphill end, referred to as Ty Bobi, which may mean bakehouse. This last section is separate, located beyond the forecourt, and lacks an internal doorway.
The exterior shows no masonry breaks, indicating that the structure was built in one period and was not previously timber-framed. However, the thick wall between the downhill dwelling and the Music Room suggests a long house plan, likely with an entrance leading to a cross-passage that provided access to animal accommodation on the right. Changes in use over time may have eliminated the need for this common entrance, which could explain the long lintel and possible masonry alterations near the door.
The downhill end originally served as a 2-bay, upper cruck dwelling with a gable end chimney in the hall. It features collared cruck couples supported by roughly hewn cross beams on the ground floor ceiling, with two rows of purlins. The hall chimney has a curved and chamfered bressummer, and there is a blocked chimney upstairs. The windows are deep-splayed, and similar beams are found in the rear parlour, which has undergone alterations. The flooring is flagged, and the stairs, likely from the 19th century, have a simple newel finial. The Music Room is raised and open to collar level, with a reused earlier tie at the right end. The uphill part retains a fireplace but is not lofted. Modern 4-pane casement windows are present on both floors, along with a half-glazed main door and a similar door for the uphill section. The rear pitch of the downhill gable has been altered, and the uphill end is set back behind a projecting chimney breast.
