Description
Capel Tegid is a Gothic chapel constructed from green and grey rough-dressed snecked stone, featuring sandstone dressings and slate roofs. The entrance front is square-shaped, with a later slate-hung gable that includes a four-light upper window. Below this is a Gothic entrance with a pointed-arched doorway adorned with applied shafts and naturalistic foliage capitals, along with a moulded label that has foliated stops. A relief roundel is present in the tympanum, and the boarded doors are fitted with simple Gothic ironwork. Flanking the entrance are trefoil windows and shallow stepped buttresses on either end.
To the left of the front is a truncated tower that formerly had a stone spire; it now features a cusped triangular window above a lancet and a ground floor doorway with a diagonal buttress. The spire has been removed since the last inspection in 1997 and replaced with a modern slated gable. To the right of the front, set back, is a stair block that has a round window above a Gothic doorway, and a two-light window with plate-tracery on the right return. The side elevations contain five two-light windows at two levels, which have plain metal frames, and vestries are located at the rear. A spherical-triangle window is found at the apex of the rear gable.
The forecourt at the entrance features two sets of stone gatepiers, along with iron gates and railings that have spear finials. Inside, the chapel has a braced roof and a U-shaped gallery supported by iron columns, with a Gothic balcony frontal. At the upper level, a second tier of columns with floral capitals supports Gothic arcading. The Set Fawr enclosure includes steps leading up to a panelled pulpit, and at the rear, panelling supports an organ case with exposed tiers of pipes. The vestries are located at the rear, while the front staircase towers feature wooden Gothic stairs with a quatrefoil iron balustrade.
