Steps, Gates and Gatepiers to Upper Terrace at Plas Brondanw Gardens

The steps, gates, and gatepiers at Upper Terrace in Plas Brondanw Gardens are notable features from the early 20th century. The tall rubble gatepiers are centrally located within the terrace revettment, with rubble walls sloping up on both sides to meet them. The tops of the gatepiers are capped with rubble and have reconstituted stone ball finials that oversail. There is one decorative wrought-iron half-gate, with its pair missing, featuring a serpentine scrolled top. Above the gate, there is a complex decorative wrought-iron overthrow adorned with scrollwork and foliate designs reminiscent of Tijou.

In front of the gatepiers, there is a landing with flights of parapetted stone steps that descend to the garden level on both the right and left sides. The landing is enclosed by a wrought iron screen at the front, flanked by square rubble piers. Below this is an arched niche in a Rustic style, featuring a projecting key and housing a carved lion made of reconstituted stone. The flights of steps lead to a long slate-paved terrace that runs parallel to the house. The ironwork is painted in the distinctive blue associated with Clough Williams Ellis.
