Description
The Pengwern Arms Hotel is a large inn complex arranged in an L-shape, primarily consisting of two stories. The building is made of whitened and partly stuccoed rubble, topped with slate roofs and featuring plain, broad chimneys. The oldest part is the central block, which is stuccoed and has two bays with large 16-pane sash windows on both floors. In the center of this block, there is a notable recessed slate armorial plaque displaying the arms of the Lewis family, inscribed with the date 1728.
To the right of this central block, there is an early 19th-century stuccoed section with a hipped roof. Its entrance front faces west and consists of three bays, featuring a central entrance with a modern boarded door and a plain rectangular fanlight. On either side of the entrance are original 16-pane sash windows, with three similar windows located above. The south face of this section has two windows and an entrance to the right, all consistent with the previous window styles.
To the left of the central block is a three-bay range built in the third quarter of the 19th century, made from whitened snecked rubble and also two stories tall. It features a stone chimney on the right with pronounced moulded capping. The central entrance bay is recessed and has a modern glazed door with a glazed inner porch. Above it is a 20-pane recessed sash window, with the outer panes narrower than the others. The flanking bays are advanced and gabled, with the left bay being wider. The building has plain bargeboards with simple wooden pendentives, and there are further similar windows on both floors, along with simple 4-pane sashes in the attics. A plain, broad stucco string course runs between the principal floors.
In front of the central entrance bay, there is a modern porch that extends into the flanking bays; it is part-glazed and has a hipped roof. At the rear, there is a large projecting storeyed range with similar fenestration and a full-height canted bay with a hipped roof at the gable end. The interior of the hotel has been modernized and is plain.
