Description

Melbourne House and Ty'r Banc in Ffestiniog is a symmetrical terrace of two three-storey, three-bay houses, built around 1830, designed as a reflected pair. The facade is made of ashlar stone with a continuous shallow-pitched slate roof and plain, rendered end chimneys. A central stack, which marks the division between the two houses, is concealed by an advanced gabled bay featuring blind windows.

Melbourne House, on the right, retains its original slightly-recessed sash windows: 12-pane on the ground floor, 9-pane on the first floor, and 6-pane on the upper floor. These windows have narrow stucco architraves and projecting slate sills. In contrast, Ty'r Banc has modern replacement windows with 15, 12, and 6 panes respectively. There are slate steps leading to a 19th-century four-panelled door at Melbourne House, which has a decorative rectangular fanlight above it. Ty'r Banc features a modern glazed door that is out of character with the building. Both houses have two modern basement windows, except for an original 6-pane window at Ty'r Banc. To the right of Melbourne House, a narrow passage leads to a boarded cellar door located diagonally beneath its right-hand window.

To the left of Ty'r Banc, there is a late 19th-century open stone porch supported by Doric columns, featuring a plain entablature with the inscription "Bank" in raised letters and a moulded cornice. Stone steps lead up to a contemporary four-panel door flanked by engaged columns. A coped dwarf step parapet is present on the right, but missing on the left. Connecting the porch to Meirion House is a high, rough-dressed, snecked rubble wall with a central entrance; a modern boarded door provides access to an alley.

The buildings have group value with other listed items in Church Square.
